A Rare Jewel
rubyrebel
"Who can find a virtuous wife? For her price is far above rubies." Proverbs 31:10

Oh to be a virtuous wife! I know what she looks like, how she speaks, how she loves her husband, and yet, reaching through the ages, I can still feel the kindred curse of Eve's desire to control...to know better than God, and lead her husband.

I desperately cry out with Paul, "O wretched (wo)man that I am! Who shall deliver me from this body of death?" Romans 7:24

And then another voice within me whispers, "Faithful is He who called you, who also will do it."

NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER GIVE IN!

We will press toward the mark of the high calling!

We will fail; we will do what we know not to do; but we will keep looking to the Author and Finisher of our faith.

Ponder today whether you are willing to be a rare jewel? Rare is different. But it is valuable. In a sense, we are to be "Ruby Rebels"

Being submissive to God is to be rebellious to the world, by default.

International Hug A Calvinist Day
In honor of the great reformer John Calvin's birthday, Ken from the Doorkeeper's Delight has created a new holiday. This new holiday is the International Hug a Calvinist Day. All of the details are on his Facebook page which you can get to from the Doorkeeper's Delight.

Here are a few of the details.....

Time and Place
Date:Thursday, July 10, 2008
Time: 12:00am - 11:55pm
Location: Anywhere you're predestined to be that day

So stop and smell the TULIPs on July 10 and hug your nearest Calvinist. We don't bite.

This year on John Calvin's birthday, hug a Calvinist and tell them how much he/she means to you.

Just for fun...
You might be a Calvinist if.....
  • If you send your mother tulips on Mother's Day.
  • If you purchased an MP3 player for the sole purpose of downloading sermons.
  • If you adjusted the default settings at Biblegateway from "NIV" to "ESV".
  • If your preacher says turn to Obediah and you do not use the index to find it.
  • You think a 50 minute sermon is too short.
  • If quotes from Pink, Piper, Spurgeon, or Sproul pop into your head at random times during the day.
  • If you are confused when someone uses the term “my Bible” as if they only have one.
  • If you smile, nod and hold your tongue with your teeth after a lively church service when someone says, “God showed up today”.
  • If you’ve ever been banned from a Sunday School class for quoting scripture.
  • If you have ever purposefully sung a different word in a hymn to conform to scripture.
  • If you’ve ever heard a wave of groans when you refer to Romans 9.
Find these and more HERE

And Finally....
I will end with a cartoon all in the spirit of fun.

Home-schoolers Threaten our Cultural Comfort

Sonny Scott wrote an article on 6/8/2008 for the Daily Journal. This article is entitled: Home-schoolers Threaten our Cultural Comfort. It is worth the read. Here are a few short excerpts.

Indications are that home schooling is working well for the kids, and the parents are pleased with their choice, but the practice is coming under increasing suspicion, and even official attack, as in California.

Why do we hate (or at least distrust) these people so much?

Methinks American middle-class people are uncomfortable around the home schooled for the same reason the alcoholic is uneasy around the teetotaler.

Their very existence represents a rejection of our values, and an indictment of our lifestyles. Those families are willing to render unto Caesar the things that Caesar’s be, but they draw the line at their children. Those of us who have put our trust in the secular state (and effectively surrendered our children to it) recognize this act of defiance as a rejection of our values, and we reject them in return.
Another portion....
Deep down, however, we know that our generation has eaten its seed corn. We lack the discipline and the vision to deny ourselves in the hope of something enduring and worthy for our posterity. We are tired from working extra jobs, and the looming depression threatens our 401k’s. Credit cards are nearly maxed, and it costs a $100 to fuel the Suburban. Now the kid is raising hell again, demanding the latest Play Station as his price for doing his school work … and there goes that modest young woman in the home-made dress with her four bright-eyed, well-behaved home-schooled children in tow. Wouldn’t you just love to wipe that serene look right off her smug face?
Take a brief moment and read the article in its entirety then come back and share with me your thoughts on the matter.

The Integrated Life

Thanks be to God: the Gospel does not allow us to live divided lives. Our education, our careers, our relationships, and our worship are all bound up together in our calling to submit to the Lordship of Christ—that is, our calling to live as Christians. These six talks by Pastor Wilson encourage us to strive after a Gospel-filled life, always seeking to embody the doctrines and beliefs we confess.

This set includes:

- Education that's Christian All the Way Down
- God and Everything Else
- What Is a Christian Worldview?
- Christ and Your Calling
- The Integrated Life
- What Worship Is; What Worship Does

For your free MP3 downloads visit Canon Press. I do not know how long these will be available so hurry!

Who Needs Teachers?
Close-up man's hands resting on Holy Bible by Ewing Galloway
Close-up man's hands resting on Holy Bible

These are phrases that have often come to the forefront of conversations in recent years. Often times it is when someone disagrees with something that these statements are vocalized. They are often used as a tool of avoidance or rejection. There is a semblance of truth mixed into each of these statements but partial truth really isn't truth, is it? I have often struggled with how to approach these statements in conversations. It is often easier to write about these things than to translate them into actual dialog. The Thirsty Theologian recently wrote a post concerning this and I was so glad to see someone else who understood this subject not only in the same manner but was vocal enough to address it.

Here are a few excerpts.
All a man really needed, I thought, was his Bible and the Holy Spirit. If a man just knew his Bible inside and out, and was filled with the Holy Spirit, what more could he need?

Seminary was a place where men filled their heads with the philosophies of men. I definitely didn’t want that. Of course, it was alright if I chose some books to read on my own. That was different. What I certainly did not need, however, was Bible commentaries or systematic theologies. I didn’t need men to tell me what the Bible meant! That was the Holy Spirit’s job.

This is really a matter of humility, isn’t it? “Just me and God” says “No man is my superior. I am equal to all those who have gone before me.” In fact, it says more than that. It says that I am their superior. They learned from others, but I can do it on my own. What audacity. How foolish. We all need teachers; it is few of us who will ever become their equals, and fewer still who will exceed their knowledge, skill, and wisdom.

Read the rest : Dumb Things I Have Believed
Let me address the three statements I listed above.

1. I do not need a teacher, God is my teacher.

Well, yes, God is our teacher. He gives us His Holy Word, prayer, and His Spirit. He ALSO calls some to be teachers, He gives us those teachers to learn from. They are to diligently teach others. Who are we to tell the Lord we do not need His teachers?

2. I have my Bible, I am not to be influenced by the mere teachings of men.

First, there is an assumption here that the teachings are merely the teachings of men. What an assumption to make! Where is humility in that?
Secondly, I would like to simply share a quote from Charles Spurgeon (also found over at Thirsty Theologian).
I am amazed that those who think so much of what the Holy Spirit can teach them often think so little of what the Holy Spirit has taught others.*
3. All I need is my Bible and the Holy Spirit.

This is really already addressed with the first two. God in his word tells us that there are other things we need. Yes, he is the provider of those things but that does not mean that we reject the way in which those needs are met. We need teachers, we need church elders to exercise church discipline (where has that gone these days?), we need others to spur us on to good deeds.

I find it a disturbing trend today that if there is an individual that uses a catechism, a confession, or the dreaded systematic theology that they are reduced to someone who is merely following the teachings of man, is a Pharisee, is legalistic, is lacking the Holy Spirit, or just doesn't know their Bible. Or if there is an individual who thinks that we should be fruit inspectors and hold each other accountable to the truth of sound doctrinal teaching and thinks church discipline is a good thing, that the individual is just prideful, judgmental, and unloving.

This type of thinking within the Christian community is a scary thing. It is about feeling good and being comfortable. This is the heart of the culture but the Christian has learned to mask it in spirituality. The heart of the Gospel however is not all about feeling good or being comfortable. It is the truth of the depravity of man before a holy and just God. It is about the rescue and redemption of a people for God's own glory, not our own. It is about being conformed to the matchless image of Christ; being disciplined, refined and molded and that is rarely a feel good and comfortable thing. This takes surrender, submission, humility, and God-ordained teachers.

The Pledge of Allegiance
Red Skelton was before my time. I do not know much about him but for those of you who are completely unfamiliar with him, Red Skelton was a movie star and comedian on television back in the 1950s. He created a number of characters, and his show was watched by millions. He ended every show by saying, "GOOD NIGHT AND GOD BLESS." Listen to the end of this. It is something he said 39 years ago. It is very important that you listen to the very end! Eerie! Take a moment and listen to it (from 1969). How would he have known that this is what is happening today?

Wednesday Hero
Maj. Mark E. Rosenberg
32 years old from Miami Lakes, Florida
3rd Battalion, 29th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division
April 8, 2008

Mark Rosenberg grew up in South Florida. "All boy," his aunt, Madelyn Rosenberg, remembers. "Very active, but very lovable." As long as she can recall, Maj. Rosenberg wanted a military career like his father, Burton Rosenberg, had.

He attended New Mexico Military Institute and entered the Army in 1996. Later, he met a woman, Julie, and they
married one day after his sister's wedding. He and Julie had two boys, now 3 and 22 months. They settled in Colorado near Fort Carson, where he was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division.

Maj. Rosenberg was on his second tour of duty when the Humvee he was riding in was struck by an IED in Baghdad.

"He would say he's over there to do a job," Madelyn Rosenberg remembered. "He loved what he was doing."

These
brave men and women sacrifice so much in their lives so that others may enjoy the freedoms we get to enjoy everyday. For that, I am proud to call them Hero.
We Should Not Only Mourn These Men And Women Who Died, We Should Also Thank God That Such People Lived.

My God Is..........
I have a treat for you all today. I am posting an article written by my own dear husband! It is entitled, "My God Is." You can also find me over at Heart of the Matter, the new April edition is up! I pray you have an especially blessed day and that my hubby's article will either introduce you to or remind you of the great and awesome God who is the only one worthy of praise!

My God is one God, the Triune God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – as revealed exclusively in the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. What I know and have experienced of Him is all that He has self-disclosed to humanity through His names and mighty acts as recorded in the Holy Scriptures and witnessed to in my life and the lives of those around me. He is sovereign and providentially reigns over and governs His creation. He is transcendent, absolutely holy, other and separate, yet He is imminent, personally involved and active in my daily life. He purposefully knit me in my mother’s womb and has ordained all my days before there was yet one of them. He knows when I sit and when I rise. He understands my thoughts from afar and is intimately acquainted with all my ways. There is nowhere I can flee from His presence for He is everywhere, holding me in His mighty right hand.

In my God there is perfect balance between His mercy and His justice, between His compassion and His condemnation, between His righteous requirement (law) and His grace. He is both Redeemer and Consuming Fire, for with God there is no grey area – He is light and in Him there is no shifting shadow. He is not becoming, He is immutable; the same yesterday, today and forever. He is the one who comforts and convicts. He is a refuge, shield and defender. He is the avenger, judge and refiner. He is truth and He is love. He is always faithful to His covenant promise, will forgive the repentant, saves the sinner who believes and will cast out the reprobate. He is a rewarded of those who diligently seek Him and will in no way clear the guilty. He is the one to whom and for whom all things exist, jealous for His own glory.

According to the kind intention of His will, my God has blessed me with every spiritual blessing, choosing me before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before Him. In unconditional love He predestined me to adoption as a son, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on me in Christ Jesus – not according to anything I have done or any works of righteousness which He foresaw in me. It is only in the death and shed blood of Jesus Christ that I am redeemed, my transgressions pardoned, and through His bodily resurrection that the finality of death has been conquered and I have the promise and hope of eternal life. My heavenly Father has sealed to me this promise and inheritance through the gift of the Holy Spirit who indwells me.

Throughout history my God has chosen and called out from the masses of humanity a people for His own possession; to be a holy nation, a royal priesthood. His longsuffering and patience toward us has been evident since the dawn of time when He asked our first parents in the Garden of Eden, “Where are you?” Being both infinite in presence, knowledge and power, this was not a question from ignorance, but an invitation and election to resurrected community and communion with Him and one another. In my personal resurrection, because of His longsuffering and patience towards me, God’s blessing and favor is more than abundant in my life. He has imparted to me peace beyond measure in the crises of life, hope eternal when all else seems dark and doubtful, and blesses me with life abundant – fulfilled in my marriage with a loving, devoted, gracious, godly wife, amazing children that words cannot describe, and a spiritual family in His Church. My God has lovingly established for me a godly heritage and displays for me how His tender mercies toward me are new every day as I interact as a husband to my wife, father to my own children and friend to my spiritual brothers and sisters. How much love my Heavenly Father has for me!

I know Him as my Good Shepherd, my Lion of Judah, my Potter, my Lamb of God, my Light of the World, my Bread of Life, my Counselor, my Champion, my Refuge, my Strong Tower, my Healer, my Banner, my Peace, my Provider, my Deliverer, my Righteousness, my Comforter, my Friend – the one who hears me, sees me and intercedes on my behalf. A Man of Sorrows acquainted with all my grief He is my Redeemer, my Savior, my King, my Lord and my Resurrection and Life.

A Blessing or A Punishment??
Psalm 139:13-16 For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
Scripture is clear that it is our Sovereign Lord who is the creator of life and when that life begins. Before we are even formed God knew us and had a plan for us. Who are we, the creation to try and take the place of God in this area of life. To determine who should be given life and who should not. These words of the Lord has had a major impact upon our own journey.

I am utterly amazed at how so many people have their eyes blinded to the truth. (2 Cor. 4:4, 1 John 2:11, John 12:40) Even after that child is in the womb and being knit together by the Lord; people deny life. I do not typically talk politics here on my blog even though I am a bit of a political junkie. I am one of those people who does take the issue of abortion into account when voting. I ran across a post today over at Reformed Chicks Blabbing that I want to share with you. It is such an unbelievable statement. It is in complete opposition to what the Word of God says about children. God calls them: a heritage unto the Lord, Olive plants, arrows, reward, blessing, gift, and more. He never calls them a punishment! Why can we not teach our children the truth and expect them to live accordingly? Why can we not offer support when they fail rather than adding grief upon grief?

Obama: "I don't want them punished with a baby"

So, pro-life Obamaicans, which is better for our pro-life position: a president who doesn't talk about abortion or pro-life issues but wouldn't promote it or be an advocate for it either, or someone who has such a low view of life that he calls a baby, "punishment" and would make an apologetic for it using his own daughters?

I think it's clear that Obama isn't post-partisan on the abortion issue, he is decidedly pro-choice.

For a vivid look at abortion take a moment and visit this site. Before doing so, please read this excerpt from their site. (note: I am NOT personaly endorsing the candidate shown on their site.)
Editors Note: Pro-Life means Pro-Life. I do not in any way shape or form, advocate, suggest or support violent action or vigilante justice against anyone in the American Holocaust business.

This site is designed to serve as a window into the depravity of men who would kill innocent humans whom they have deemed to be non-humans. There exists a frightening correlation between the American holocaust of abortion and the NAZI holocaust of World War II infamy. This site endeavors to uncover those correlation's in all their graphic horror.

Parental Warning!!!

This site contains graphic photos of the

abortion holocaust and the NAZI holocaust.

Please come back and share you comments. I always welcome comments as long as they are given in a spirit of respect for others with civility. Any slanderous comments, comments with foul language, or those showing disrespect to the Lord will be deleted.

A Disclaimer on Conviction
I find it interesting how many in the world cannot or do not deal well with others who have strong convictions contrary to their own. This is especially true in the Christian community. Our culture has seeped in more than many realize. Are we to put a disclaimer saying, "this may not apply to every individual -- the Lord calls some to one thing and others to another," for people to be comfortable and to keep from being hit with the onslaught of accusations of judgmentalism??

Firstly, I think that if we always preface things we disagree with or are not comfortable with by saying, " the Lord calls some to one thing and others to another," this really can simply be a cop-out. Where is the conviction in that? There is indeed absolute truth! To say otherwise is to take up the cultural mandate.

Secondly, just because someone shares their beliefs and shares them with passion, zeal, and the conviction that it is truth does not mean that they are being judgmental toward others. To assign that motive to them is just as judgmental in my opinion.

When did it become so wrong to state something with conviction? If offense is taken maybe it is in the reading of what was said or the readers conscience and not in the writing, substance, or motive of the author.

Those who like to tell others they are judgmental because they state things definitively perhaps should evaluate their own reasons for feeling judged. Someone who shares what the Lord has done in their life does so out of obedience, love, and zeal not out of desiring to condemn others. (though I will admit there are exceptions but I would venture to say they are indeed exceptions not the rule)

Why can we not disagree and be okay with the fact that others disagree with us. Why can we not be okay with the fact that others may believe us to be wrong? It is the culture that says you must accept everyone's beliefs as valid and true. The culture has gone as far as to say it is not even enough to agree to disagree, but we must legitimize the others stance as just as correct and truthful. This is not acceptable to God, He tells us there is only one truth.

Do our lives as Christians all look the same? No, but this does not mean that there is not a correct answer. It simply means that we are all in different places on our journey with the Lord. This is what we must keep in mind.

Our lives look different because we have different personalities and functions (hands verses feet) and because of where we are at in our journey; not because there is one truth for one Christian and a different truth for another. This train of thought is "cultural" Christianity. Our lives should be growing to look more and more alike as we all grow more and more in Christ-likeness. There is only one Christ. There is only one Bride.

If by chance you feel I am being judgmental in this post; I am not. I am simply stating what I have witnessed and even experienced personally. Take it or leave it, agree or disagree, if you are wrestling with it then wrestle with it, I am okay with that. You may think me wrong; I am okay with that. I may think you are wrong. The question is can you be okay with that?

"They succeeded where lesser men failed," said Chaplain Robert Glazener. "They proved themselves in ways that men out there who never served, never volunteered, never sacrificed, would never understand. They sought neither glory nor special recognition, but they gained both by their actions. They are the true American heroes today and deserve more honor than we can humbly bestow on them."

True Wisdom -- Law & Grace
True wisdom manifests itself in the observance of the law.--John Calvin

Now for those of you who are screaming legalism, please bear with me. There are many who focus so much on the grace of God that they try to bury the law; those who do this fail to see God within the law. The law was given to point out sin and to show us that we could never be good enough for a holy and just God. It showed us our need for a savior. The law did more than that though. The law is also a revelation of who God is. Take the 10 Commandments as an example. In every commandment we see our inadequacy and we see the character of God. We see that we are sinful and cannot keep the law; this shows us the holy nature of God. Let us just name a few examples. The law points out our idolatry, dishonesty, adulterous nature, and murderous hearts. By contrast, knowing that the law is what is required of a holy God, the law shows us who God is; He is the One True God, He is honest, He is faithful, and He is life! Oh, May God be glorified!!

We cannot keep the law, we cannot present ourselves holy before a holy God. Oh, but the power of Jesus can! God sent His son to die in the place of sinners. Oh, May God be glorified!!

Many hold so tightly to that grace that they dismiss the law. After all, Jesus fulfilled the law. This is true but simply because it was fulfilled does not mean it was done away with completely. It was made full and complete, not discarded. The moral law remains in effect and we are to live in obedience to it.
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. John 14:15

If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. John 15:10
But what of those who cry legalism anytime the law is mentioned?
What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Romans 6:1-2
Many simply use the cry against legalism as a way to avoid biblical obedience. I have seen several who use freedom in Christ as a way to avoid the truth of the scripture. Many are simply immature in their Christian faith and do not comprehend how the two work together.

So what is legalism? I submit to you that legalism is not the living out the law of God by the power of the Spirit. We are commanded to do so. Legalism is when the law of God becomes our means of salvation and our means of merit. Salvation and merit is the job of grace in Christ Jesus. Yet, we need not remove the law for grace to abound. They work together.

The next time you see someone who lives according to the law of God, maybe even more so than yourself, I would submit an evaluation is in order. Before exclaiming legalism or pharisee and dismissing them; perhaps one should consider that individual's heart or more importantly their own heart. The resistance toward another may in reality not be the other individual's problem of legalism but one's own sin of resisting the conviction of the Spirit upon their own life.

May we all exclaim, "Oh, May God be glorified!!"

Four Chaplains Day

February 3rd is Four Chaplains day. Since my husband is a military chaplain this story has always been very touching to me. I hope you enjoy it and will share it with others.

On the evening of Feb. 2, 1943, the U.S.A.T. Dorchester, overcrowded with 902 servicemen, merchant seamen & civilian workers, was torpedoed by a German submarine off the coast of Newfoundland. The transport sank in fire & smoke in 27 minutes. The ship's crew launched lifeboats & rafts. Many servicemen jumped into the water. Two of the three escort ships, the Coast Guard cutters Comanche & Escanaba, circled the Dorchester rescuing 231 survivors. The third cutter, CGC Tampa, continued on, escorting the remaining two ships in the convoy. According to those present, four Army chaplains aboard the Dorchester brought hope in despair & light in darkness.

It the ensuing chaos, four chaplains: a priest, a rabbi and two protestant ministers; distributed life jackets. Quickly & quietly the four chaplains spread out among the soldiers. There they tried to calm the frightened, tend the wounded & guide the disoriented toward safety. When most of the men were topside, the chaplains opened a storage locker & began distributing life jackets. When there were no more lifejackets in the locker, the chaplains removed theirs & gave them to four frightened young men. As the ship went down, survivors in nearby rafts could see the four chaplains-arms linked & braced against the slanting deck. Their voices could also be heard offering prayers.

On February 7, 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower remarked: "And we remember that, only a decade ago, aboard the transport Dorchester, four chaplains of four faiths together willingly sacrificed their lives so that four others might live. In the three centuries that separate the Pilgrims of the Mayflower from the chaplains of the Dorchester, America's freedom, her courage, her strength, and her progress have had their foundation in faith." Eisenhower concluded: "Today as then, there is need for positive acts of renewed recognition that faith is our surest strength, our greatest resource."

Excerpt from American Minute

31 Ways to Pray for Our Military

1. Protection

"The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them."
