Before the Big Move
13 Things to accomplish before the big move to Alaska.
  1. Clear out stuff we do not really need.
  2. Replenish the grass the dogs wore down in the yard.
  3. Find a reputable realtor in Alaska.
  4. Check ferry schedules, availably, and make reservations.
  5. Figure out how and what to pack in our suite cases for the dramatic change in weather.
  6. Get dogs ready for international travel.
  7. Study to transfer our driver's licenses, we will actually have to take a written test.
  8. Take a quick trip to Missouri and Iowa to visit some family before we move that far North West!
  9. Find a home to live in once we arrive in Alaska.
  10. Finish homeschool lessons on schedule.
  11. Work ahead on blog posts so when we are traveling I have something to post with limited time. I can post about our trip when more time allows. You just never know when you are using library and hotel computers.
  12. Find someone who will take and love my plants since I am not going to move them with us this time.
  13. Remember to enjoy life where we are while tending to our future location.

How long is your tour there? I'll be heading to either Washington state or Georgia next year with my Navy man... I've never lived outside of Michigan, so it'll be interesting.

Happy TT!

Yes, it'd either be Bangor or Kings Bay in Georgia. As a nuclear submariner, he only has two places he can be sent... which on one had is nice, but it'd also be nice to see other places as well.

You're going to enjoy the fishing there, that's for sure. If you like to hunt, that'll be great as well. Otherwise, hope you like winter, cause a great deal of Alaska gets a lot of winter weather. Enjoy the tour.

Hope you get it all done and more. I couldn't imagine moving such a long distance. I barely survived moving across town a couple of months ago.

Kristine, have I told you how HAPPY I am for you? Oh my goodness! We absolutely loved Alaska. And the best part is, if you decide it's really not the place for you, the assignments are usually only about 3 to 4 years (which to us Air Force folks is really nothing.....).

I'll ask around to see if I can find some realtor recommendations for you from people we know who have bought and/or sold up there. We rented our first year, then moved into base housing ~ which we absolutely LOVED, by the way. Send me an email and let me know which area you're thinking about. :)

Blessings,
Trish

Hi there! My sweet husband is from Alaska! His family is still up there and loves it. They keep trying to convince us to move there~ really, it isn't going to happen. We like sunny Florida too much.

Anyhow, I'm not sure what area you are moving to but I can guess it's one of 2 places. My bil and sil go to a great church in eagle river (nearby Elmendorf AFB) called called Church in the Wildwood. Hope your move is great. I know PCS moves can be hard- we've done lots.

...and BREATHE! Before you know it you will be living the adventure of your life. We LOVED Alaska...as I've shared with you. LOL

Did you have ferry reservations on there? We LOVED the ferry - gorgeous spots of land that we wouldn't have seen otherwise....and our dog did fine....and so did those of us who get motion sickness. LOL

Base housing on Elmendorf is really nice since they renovated it and built new housing a few years ago. If you are going to live off base, whatever you do, don't live in Mountain View or Fairview....lol. When I was stationed there, they would not allow us to live in Mt. View, not sure if the same rule is in effect but anyway, YOU DO NOT want to live in that neighborhood lol. Also Spenard area is where all the prostitutes reign and its nasty....you don't want to end up living near there.

I think the best neighborhoods in Anchorage are the lower and upper Hillside areas and near O'malley road and Eagle River is nice if you like that "out of the city" feel. We lived in Eagle River for about a year but the commute and then being out away from Anchorage, wasn't for us.

Well this was all free advice, take it or leave it! ;) Hope you all love Alaska. If you are looking for a church there, which I don't know if you would be because I think you mentioned your husband is a chaplain, we have one of our churches there and our close friends Pastor it, we actually may be back up there one day when my husband gets his license after we finish Seminary....who knows! ; )
