Today I have 13 things about the 12 Days of Christmas! #1 is about the 12 Days of Christmas and the rest are based on the song.- The Twelve Days of Christmas as a celebration and festival is old and steeped in traditions from Christian cultures around the world. For many, the idea of the 12 days as a length of celebration is based on a sequence of verses in the Holy Bible (Matthew 2:1-12), and a belief that it may have taken 12 days for the three kings (also called wise men or magi) to travel to Bethlehem.
- The "true love" is God Himself. The "me" who receives the present is every baptized person. The Partridge in a Pear Tree is Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
- 2 Turtle Doves represents the Old & New Testaments.
- 3 French Hens represents The Three Theological Virtues: 1) Faith, 2) Hope, and 3) Love (1 Corinthians 13:13)
- 4 Calling Birds represents the Four Gospels: 1) Matthew, 2) Mark, 3) Luke, and 4) John, which proclaim the Good News of God's reconciliation of the world to Himself in Jesus Christ.
- 5 Golden Rings represents the Penteteuch, the first five books of the Bible: 1) Genesis, 2) Exodus, 3) Leviticus, 4) Numbers, and 5) Deuteronomy, which gives the history of humanity's sinful failure and God's response of grace in the creation of a people to be a light to the world.
- 6 Geese A-laying represents the six days of creation that confesses God as Creator and Sustainer of the world (Genesis 1).
- 7 Swans A-swimming represents seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: 1) prophecy, 2)ministry, 3) teaching, 4) exhortation, 5) giving, 6) leading, and 7) compassion (Romans 12:6-8; cf. 1 Corinthians 12:8-11)
- 8 Maids A- Milking represents The eight Beatitudes: 1) Blessed are the poor in spirit, 2) those who mourn, 3) the meek, 4) those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, 5) the merciful, 6) the pure in heart, 7) the peacemakers, 8) those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake. (Matthew 5:3-10)
- 9 Ladies Dancing represents the Fruit of the Holy Spirit: 1) love, 2) joy, 3) peace, 4) patience, 5) kindness, 6) generosity, 7) faithfulness, 8) gentleness, and 9) self-control. (Galatians 5:22).
- 10 Lord's A-Leaping represents the ten commandments: 1) You shall have no other gods before me; 2) Do not make an idol; 3) Do not take God's name in vain; 4) Remember the Sabbath Day; 5) Honor your father and mother; 6) Do not murder; 7) Do not commit adultery; 8) Do not steal; 9) Do not bear false witness; 10) Do not covet. (Exodus 20:1-17)
- 11 Piper's Piping represents the eleven Faithful Apostles: 1) Simon Peter, 2) Andrew, 3) James, 4) John, 5) Philip, 6) Bartholomew, 7) Matthew, 8) Thomas, 9) James bar Alphaeus, 10) Simon the Zealot, 11) Judas bar James. (Luke 6:14-16). The list does not include the twelfth disciple, Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus to the religious leaders and the Romans.
- 12 Drummers Drumming represents the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostles' Creed: 1) I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. 2) I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. 3) He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. 4) He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell [the grave]. 5) On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. 6) He will come again to judge the living and the dead. 7) I believe in the Holy Spirit, 8) the holy catholic Church, 9) the communion of saints, 10) the forgiveness of sins, 11) the resurrection of the body, 12) and life everlasting.

Now that the visitors have headed home and we are getting back into our regular routine it is time to hit the books hard! We have taken a two week break for Thanksgiving and the break is now officially over! Starting tomorrow school is back in full swing! Second quarter is starting late but we will work hard and push through. Study, study, study, full speed ahead! We will see how long we last until we run out of steam! Hopefully, we can make it until the middle of December when we will break again for Christmas and a birthday. This time of year is always difficult for us. The Christmas season is always a busy time, but even more so for us than for many others, since hubby is a pastor. It is his busy work time. This year though he will have a little bit of a break for a change. We also have a child with a birthday on the 26th, which we try very hard to make special for her so she does not feel like her birthday is lost amidst all the Christmas festivities. How are all you homeschoolers out there planning to handle school schedules during the Christmas holiday?Labels: Homeschooling

HOSPITAL'ITY, n. [L. hospitalitas.] The act or practice of receiving and entertaining strangers or guests without reward, or with kind and generous liberality.I have not yet perfected this gift but I am glad that the Lord has laid it upon my heart. We have been blessed to share our home with so many (even more than this last week or so). One is truly blessed when they share those things the Lord has provided!
It is good to have an empty house and to spend some time focusing on our own family for a time. We will be ready and our doors will be open the next time the Lord allows us to show hospitality.

About a month ago I posted on Protestant Prayer Beads and their meaning. These are not to be confused with the Rosary beads. Well, my friend Valerie has taken that post on the Protestant Prayer Beads and done something wonderful! She has taken upon herself the task of making some of her own along with a booklet of explanation! Her beads are very beautiful and are inexpensively priced! Please read through my post on the beads and visit Valerie. You just might decide that these would be a great gift for others this Christmas season!Valerie's beads...

Twice a year we must go through what I like to call "the big switch out". We pull out all of our plastic containers full of off season clothing and switch them with the clothing in the dressers. With many children this means alot of clothes. It usually takes an entire day, sometimes longer. When we are living in a place that has very distinct seasons it is much easier, we just do a total switch. Where we are now, it does not really get that cold but is not warm enough for cotton shorts, so we have to do a partial switch. Of course children tend to grow like weeds and the clothing gets passed down from child to child. We often have to see which clothing items fit each child during this particular season. This year I was able to weed out two garbage bags full of clothing that are no longer in good condition. I am so thankful for my children and how grateful they can be, they get excited when something gets passed down to them and even call it new! I am very blessed by this! There are occasions when we find "pockets", when there is a child that just does not seem to have anything to fit them during this particular season and their size. That is when new clothing is bought, of course if you are a boy (since we only have two and they are 5 years apart) or one of the older girls (with no one to hand things down to them) there is the privilege of new clothes more often. Well, we have just finished today the "big switch out" and I am tired! There was a bit of a fashion show as we tried to determine what fit each child. We are finally done at least for the next few months until it is time to do it all over again!Labels: Family, Quiverfull

WESTMINSTER LARGER CATECHISM
Q. 115. Which is the fourth commandment?
A. The fourth commandment is, Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work; but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested in the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath-day and hallowed it.
Exodus 20:8-11 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Me Time is a myth. It is an unattainable, always interruptible, never satisfactional piece of junk psychology. Me Time, by its very name, suggests that who we are during the daily grind is not WHO we truly are. It tells us that we are someone other than "WIFE" or "MOTHER." It begs us to search for fulfillment outside of those titles. It blames precious little ones and God-given spouses for suppressing us. It reduces motherhood to a disease in which the life is slowly being sucked out of us by tiny dirty faces and endless monotonous tasks. It says you can never be refreshed by spending time in the presence of those you care for day in and day out. It points out a perceived "hole" in your world that needs to be filled, a tank that must be fueled up, a monster that will swallow you lest you neglect to feed it precious Me Time. But, it will never be enough. Anything else you seek to fill that emptiness will fall miserably short. Only God can fill what you are aching for.

Early in the spring of 1905, my husband and I were sojourning in Elmira, New York. We contracted a deep friendship for a couple by the name of Mr. and Mrs. Doolittle—true saints of God. Mrs. Doolittle had been bedridden for nigh twenty years. Her husband was an incurable cripple who had to propel himself to and from his business in a wheel chair. Despite their afflictions, they lived happy Christian lives, bringing inspiration and comfort to all who knew them. One day while we were visiting with the Doolittles, my husband commented on their bright hopefulness and asked them for the secret of it. Mrs. Doolittle’s reply was simple: “His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.” The beauty of this simple expression of boundless faith gripped the hearts and fired the imagination of Dr. Martin and me. The hymn “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” was the outcome of that experience.~~ Civilla Martin- Psalm 84:3-4 Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself,where she may lay her young, at your altars, O of hosts, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house,ever singing your praise! Selah
- Matthew 10:29-31 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.
- Luke 12:6-7 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.
HIS EYE IS ON THE SPARROW
Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heaven and home,
When Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.Refrain
I sing because I’m happy,
I sing because I’m free,
For His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.“Let not your heart be troubled,” His tender word I hear,
And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.Refrain
Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,
When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.Refrain

In the fall of 1621, 90 Wampanoag Indians, led by Chief Massasoit, and 52 English colonists gathered for a three-day harvest feast. This event also included recreation and entertainment. The Pilgrims and Wampanoag communicated through Squanto, who was a member of the Patuxet tribe. Other than this very little is actually known about what actually took place at that feast from which our Thanksgiving holiday comes. Our annual holiday was named Thanksgiving by Abraham Lincoln in the year 1863. I found a quote from 1621, written by Edward Winslow, as he remembered that first gathering, and the sentiment he expressed
called for sharing and giving thanks.
"And although it be not always so plentiful as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want that we often wish you partakers of our plenty."
